Flyball
is a team sport for dogs that was invented in California
in the late 70's. Legend has it that Herbert Wagner
first showed it on the Johnny Carson Show to millions
of Americans. Soon afterwards, dog training clubs
in the Detroit/Toronto area were making and using
Flyball Boxes. In the early 80's the sport became
so popular that the North American Flyball Association
(NAFA) was formed and became the worldwide authority
for Flyball.
The
sport itself is similar to drag racing. Each team
runs four dogs and usually has a fifth dog in reserve.
The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles
spaced 10 feet apart, and a box at the end. The first
hurdle is 6 feet from the start line and the box is
15 feet from the last hurdle for an overall length
of 51 feet. The first dog races down the course, leaping
over the 4 hurdles, to the box, spring-loaded with
a tennis ball. They then step on the box's pedal to
release the ball, which the dog then catches. Then
she / he burns back down the course, back over the
same hurdles, crossing a line which sends the next
dog away. After four dogs have successfully navigated
the course the relay is complete.
There
are no restrictions to breed, size, pedigree, or age.

Dog agility is a sport in which a dog moves through
an obstacle course with the guidance of his or her
handler. Dogs run off leash, so the handler's only
controls are voice and body language. In competition,
both accuracy and speed are important. During 1977,
a group of dog training enthusiasts had a meeting
to work out a new dog competition which they had been
asked to put on as a demonstration event at Crufts
in 1978. The format they came up with would take some
of the obstacles from working sheep dog trials, combining
it with the concept of show jumping and would require
obedience. This new sport was to be called Dog Agility.
In
1979 it was back again at Crufts only this time it
was a competition and not a demonstration. It would
be true to say that in the early years the dog agility
was an amusing interlude for the audience but now
it has grown into a major competition. Since 1979
agility has exploded all around the world. There are
many different disciplines of agility and thousands
of clubs that focus in each discipline. In Alberta,
you can attend a trial almost every weekend in different
cities around the province.
GROUNDWORK - $150 plus GST (8 weeks)
This is where it all starts. Groundwork teaches the skills required before moving on to focused obstacle training in Obstacle Performance. This class will give you the foundation skills for agility or can be a great refresher for experienced dogs that need to “tune-up” their basic skills. Your dog will learn to focus and be attentive with the distraction of other dogs working. You will work to perfect your sit, down and stay. We will show you how to cue your dog to move and turn together, team work.
The goal of this class is not to be working/learning all pieces of equipment but rather on becoming familiar with obstacles designed to promote balance and coordination. Your bind will be strengthened by incorporating fun “training games” to promote learning through play.
Prerequisites: Basic Obedience skills. |
OBSTACLE PERFORMANCE - $150 plus GST (8 weeks)
In this level, dogs learn how to properly perform each of the individual agility obstacles. The goal is to have every dog executing the obstacles in a safe and happy manner. We will continue to build on the foundation skills, learning obstacles at low heights, continued contact and weave pole training, more flat work and short sequences. Dogs will work on and off leash.
Pre-requisites: Groundwork |
TEAM WORK - $150 plus GST (8 weeks)
Teams will continue working on small, simple sequences of obstacles. We will focus on consistent communication of commands from the handler and the focus and responsiveness of the dogs. The goal is to prepare the dog and handler for the more advanced levels of agility. The focus of these sessions is to help you perfect your execution of smaller sequences in order to facilitate your smoothness in handling when you get to run a full course. The obstacles will be raised to full height. Emphasis will be placed on handling skills and sequencing. Teams must be working contacts at full height, have a good start line wait and be able to work off leash without visiting others to advance from this class.
Pre-requisites: Teams must have completed Groundwork, Obstacle Performance or be able to show an understanding of handling and a working knowledge of all obstacles at lower heights and be able to work free from distraction. |
TRICKS & TURNS (OLD FUNDAMENTALS
I) $150.00 plus GST (8 weeks)
Now that you and your dog are executing simple sequences it is time to add some difficulty to the equation. In this level, you will start to learn different patterns, more complex handling techniques, working with directional commands and angle approaches to obstacles. Handlers & dogs will begin to solidify their obstacle performance, particularly the weave poles and contacts. Longer sequences will be run. Handling exercises will be stressed. Teams must be working free from distraction and have a solid wait (at the start line) prior to advancing to the next level. Foundation work will continue to be highlighted.
Pre-requisites: Teams must have completed Team Work or be able to show an understanding of the previous requirements. |
FINE TUNING $150.00 plus GST (8 weeks)
This class will focus on advancing handling skills. Sequences will address varying topics each week such as pattern recognition, distance work, weave entrances, obstacle discrimination, etc. We will help you evaluate your strengths as part of a team with your dog and improve on your weaknesses. You will work towards reinforcing the bond between handler and dog so that you are able to read each other's progress on the course. |
COMPETITION $150.00 plus GST (8 weeks)
Now
that you and your dog have the tools it is now
time to discuss competing. This class focuses
on getting you ready to compete in trials. We
will teach the different types of games played
in the various disciplines, advance your handling
skills, and cover the basics of trialing. |
PERFORMANCE
$80.00 per month plus GST (Month to Month)
The
Performance class is an ongoing level of instruction
aimed towards dog/handler teams that are competing
or would like to further their training to a
higher level of competition. All dogs entering
this class must have completed the See Spot
Run agility program or equivalent training as
assessed by our staff. |
